110 Billion Crayolas from Easton &
Take One Down & Pass It Around
The
Crayola Factory Tour is not a tour of the Binney & Smith factory in
Easton, Pennsylvania. The Crayola Factory tour is a very colorful part of
Two Rivers Landing on Centre Square (also home to The National Canal Museum).
Crayola has two on-going demonstrations and you get to see how crayons and
markers are made but the real emphasis of the Crayola tour is hands-on fun.
The tour
is free-form and unguided, allowing time for kids and their parents (and
grandparents) to express themselves in all kinds of media: crayons (of course),
markers, finger paints, clay, and chalk as well as more advanced PC play
stations. Everywhere you turned, there was a flash of color, something
going on, and mother-propelled strollers navigating through the crowd to
get to the next attraction.
I was more fascinated
by the Binney & Smith Crayola history. To date, more than 110 billion
(and counting) Crayolas have been made at the Easton factory. If you think
about it, that. s a box of 18 crayons for every living person on earth,
all made in Easton. Now, if you lay those crayolas end to end&
While I was fascinated by the numbers,
my daughter Kara led the way, pointing out something new at each play
station, picking up samples of crayons, markers, and clay as we moved
along. Always surrounded by wild splashes of light and color, the youngest
stroller-bound kids were mesmerized. At every turn, there was a
Crayola employee or volunteer to help, clean up, or preserve the colorful
creations bound for refrigerators everywhere. And more than a few adults
jumped right in to create their own masterpieces.
Kara also researched this adventure at www.crayola.com.
The site is a very attractive fun and games alternative to the tour in
case mom can. t make the drive to Easton.
